Michelle Plummer
Michelle Plummer was born and raised in Paola, KS. She is a seventh generation Deaf woman from her mom’s side. Both of Michelle’s parents are Deaf and she has three older CODA (Child of Deaf Adult), non-deaf sisters with Michelle being the youngest. Michelle is a highly skilled equestrian and helps her dad run the family farm. Michelle has many fur children including horses, dogs, and cats! Her most favorite hobby is creating and performing ASL Poetry, Hand Shape Stories and Storytelling.
Michelle is an alumni of the Kansas School for the Deaf, class of 2013. She currently works as a Dormitory Teacher at KSD (Kansas School for the Deaf) as well as a Crisis Line as a Shift Supervisor, a free, nation-wide resource and referral source for Deaf ASL users experiencing crisis. Michelle is the Media Specialist and helps lead workshops for Deaf Transformation. She previously worked as a camp counselor at Sertoma Camp for Deaf and CODA Youth in St. Joseph, Missouri and as a counselor and activity leader for the Deaf Teen Institute Camp sponsored by DeafLEAD from Columbia, Missouri.
Michelle is an active member of KAD (Kansas Association for Deaf), OCD (Olathe Club of the Deaf), and the Museum of Deaf History Arts and Culture. She is also a member of the NATRC (North American Trail Rider Competition).
Using her personal experience, skills and ability to overcome oppression and barriers to equal access, Michelle is called to support her community in spiritual and emotional support and recovery. Michelle brings those skills along with her training as a dorm teacher and camp counselor into her work to support deaf clients at the Deaf crisis line and with Deaf Transformation as a workshop leader. Her vision is to further develop Deaf Transformation to become an in person camp/retreat experience reducing the barriers for equal access to spiritual and emotional recovery and support.
During her school years Michelle was active in 4-H, Girl Scouts, Oratorical Club, SBC (Student Body Council), and various sports at KSD. While a student she won several local and regional ASL Bowl competitions and currently serves as an assistant ASL Bowl coach for students at the secondary level. She also has experience riding in a Horse Drill team.
